How does a convection oven work?
A convection oven contains several heating elements that are heated via electricity. In addition to this, convection ovens are equipped with one or more fans that distribute warm air evenly throughout the oven's interior compartment. Since the constant air movement cooks the food evenly from all sides, the ovens are well known for the uniform way in which they cook food. Another advantage of the even heat distribution is faster food preparation times.
What can be prepared in a convection oven?
The biggest advantage of a convection oven is that it is suitable for preparing almost any dish. Ovens are particularly well suited to baking bread and desserts. Because the food is cooked using only hot air, the result is light and airy baked goods. Convection ovens are also suitable for preparing meat, vegetables and roast potatoes. This can be done at a very high temperature, resulting in crispy food with a rich taste. Setting the oven to a low temperature allows you to cook food very slowly for a softer texture and this setting is ideal for tender meat dishes that need a long time to cook through.
Are there different types of convection ovens?
Although it is possible to purchase an oven that functions solely as a convection oven, there are other models available that can perform multiple functions. Some convection ovens also include a steam function that can cook food using water vapour or steam. This cooking method is a great way to ensure that your food retains its colour and flavour. Some convection ovens also come with a grill function that can be used to cook any ingredient quickly and make it crispy at the same time.
What should you bear in mind when purchasing a convection oven?
When deciding on which convection oven to purchase, size is one of the most important considerations since it has a direct impact on the capacity of the cooking appliance. Some ovens are large enough to accommodate three or four trays of food at the same time. The size and format of these trays can vary and it is important to ensure that you select a format that can be used seamlessly with your other kitchen appliances. If you regularly use large oven trays to prepare food in your kitchen, it is important that you make sure that these trays can fit into the oven before purchasing it. Another important consideration to keep in mind is the power output of the oven: the higher the oven is rated, the more powerful it will be.
How can you clean a convection oven?
An oven is easiest to clean directly after it has been used. As soon as the oven has cooled down completely its inside compartment can be wiped with a damp cloth. If there are any stubborn food scraps in the oven you can simply place a bowl of water in the oven and allow it to heat up to around 200 degrees Celsius. As soon as the water turns into steam it will loosen the food scraps; once the steam has done its job, you can turn the oven off and allow it to cool down again. After it has cooled down, you can wipe the interior down with a damp cloth to remove any leftover residues. Don't forget to open the door occasionally and clean it thoroughly with water.
